Cathedral of the Holy Cross
After 150 years, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross is undergoing a much needed restoration.
Cardinal Sean O’Malley and Rector Msgr. Kevin O’Leary chose Baker Liturgical Arts of Plantville CT to partake in the historical restoration, who in turn contracted The Keck Group, also known as “The Cathedral Pew Restorers”, to do the complicated refinishing work.
Removal of more than three thousand feet of pews took place in April, 2017. The pews were built into the floor, and each and every pew had to be cut flush with the slightly raised floor level under the pews (which will be removed so that there is no elevation transition), leaving almost four inches of the pew ends in the floor.
This process will make the installation easier, as the ends will have been previously cut to size.
We are removing the existing divider wall and substituting new joiners, so parishioners can slide all the way across the pew, vs. half way.
The side aisle pews are also being shortened to make way for the new HVAC system.
Installation is planned prior to Easter, 2019.

As the Christmas deadline nears for the installation of Pews and Wainscot, we have been busy finishing the new parts and beginning re-assembly.
The mating of existing ends and backs with the new seats and supports has proved successful with the long and short pew version samples completed. No matter how much time and effort expended on the design work and the sizing, a sigh of relief cannot be breathed until all of the parts fit as planned and the final assembly can take place.
As can be seen in the photos below, the mockup of long and short pews is complete and the finishing has begun at an accelerated pace in order to start final assembly and prep work for installation.
New Atwood Hamlin Kneelers have been ordered; special metal and leg colors and an architect chosen fabric will make these kneelers one of a kind. These should be in just in time for the early December install.
As usual, the schedule changes daily from the construction manager as they make the final push to deadline.

St. John Church in Goshen New York, a welcome nearby project for a change after Boston, Virginia Beach, and multiple NY City projects, underwent a full renovation beginning in June and completed in early September.
The Keck Group was chosen to restore the pews and install new kneelers, and the job came out perfect, as the accompanying pictures and note from Fr. George Hafemann attests.
These old timers required much tender care, as they have survived the use of over seventy years.
